Florida Wasn’t Hot Enough

“This is the best email I’ve ever had from Prema!” my youngest grandson (ten) said, reading off his mom’s computer. “It’s short!” When my daughter later reported this, I was elated!

During last year’s visit, my grandson and granddaughter (twelve) on a hot day set up a tent by the street side to sell cold, fruit-flavored drinks for a school fundraiser. I mostly sat in the shade, but once I stepped out to a car where the woman, sipping her drink, wanted to know about India.

Later my daughter told me that my grandson had felt embarrassed by my talking too long. I responded that I don’t know what to say (briefly) when asked why I’m in India. She replied that she says, with a note of humor in her voice, “Florida wasn’t hot enough.” I laughed and intend to use her words.

My realization is, “By being open to children’s feelings and views, we may not only improve our actions but make known that we’re receptive to their sharing. ”
